For 12th grade how many pages per day to read. We are designing our own lit. this year and I don't want to go too slow or fast. My dh says 30 pages per day?

I'll try to search later, but I have searched this forum in the past and found some page number guidelines. I do remember that it varies quite a bit depending on what the student is reading. I think 30 pages in an hour is too much for a lot of harder works.

Well, I am not meaning how many hour per credit. I see literature as something he should be reading outside his usual school day - actually he can read some during the day but the majority of his lit. class I want to be what he does in the evening. I guess that is why I said 30 pages. DH said his lit. class in high school he had to read 30 per night. So I am thinking - during "class time" during the day there will be: discussion, he answering questions, writing papers/essays. . . and reading later/homework. In college all reading will be done outside the class times. I guess I want to prepare him for that - the idea that not all reading and assignments can be done during the "school day" like most of our homeschooling has been.

It would depend upon the book. Some books will be fast and easy and others may be a long, hard slog. I'm not sure how I will handle this, either, hm.

It might be good to vary it from time to time throughout the year. I remember taking a Russian lit course over a January-term in college and I had never toread so much at a time! (And loved it! Of course, that was an intensive month with just one class.)

 

I've had my high schoolers read 25 pages a day at times, up to 50 pages/day (wouldn't recommend the 50/day all year long, but for periods). This is for classic literature. And of course, there have been select times where we've gone through more slowly, too.

 

But I think your idea of 30/day is certainly a good, reasonable pace!

Thanks for the reply's. I think 20-40 pages depending on the book and assisgnments too.

 

I love this board - a great place to bounce ideas around (other then just in my head!)
