Foreign Language

Recommended Posts

Dd will be starting 9th grade in the fall. She's taken Latin in the lower grades, but would like to learn foriegn lang. I've gone to a lot of college websites and it seems they like to see 3 or 4 years of the same Foreign Lang. So, I'd like her to take 4 yrs of a particular language (top choices are Spanish, French, or Hindi)

I would like suggestions for online foreign language classes that offer 4 years of foreign language that you all have had sucess with and your dc has learned and retained the language.

Also, can dc take 2 years of hs foreign lang (9th,10th) online and then 2 years (11th, 12th) at community college? Or will cc language class be repetitive to what she learned online? (hope this makes sense) Would colleges consider 2 yrs online & 2 yrs cc - 4 years of FL?

Thanks so much for your help! :001_smile:

I suggest 1-2yrs hs & 2yrs cc. Since 1 semester cc = 1yr hs, she'd have up to 6yr hs FL credit. There will be some repetition from hs to cc, but probably just enough to make FL an easier class than a hard one.

My niece had 4yrs hs Spanish & now, as a science/med major still has to take 1yr FL in college. If she'd done what you're suggesting, she'd had more hs FL credit, plus gotten the college graduation req. out of the way.

Dd#1 had 1yr hs (FL Virtual School) & 1 yr cc, but still needed 1 more semester to graduate as an English major. She's strongly suggesting her sister take a 2nd yr here to keep the same teacher & method for the whole sequence.

K-FL,

Thanks for the advice about taking 1-2 yrs hs FL and 2 yrs cc. Also, do you know if dc took 1-2 yrs FL in 9th & 10th grades then 11-12th went to cc for FL, will cc give her a placeement test?

Also, some of my friends 15 yo dc take a placement take at local cc and if they get 500 or higher in each section they can take cc courses in 9th grade onward. If my dd took this placement this spring and "passed" would you suggeset she go straight to dual enrollment and take FL at cc for 4 years of hs?? Would that be a better route (look better on a transcript?)

Thank you so much for taking the time to post!

The standard caveat, you'll have to ask the school about placement. I'd also ask the instructor's suggestion. I doubt w/1 yr hs they'd test out, unless they already speak the language & are doing the official class to bone up on the grammar, etc.

As to the transcript, college level looks better than hs, but 2-3 hs years is minimum to enroll in many (most?) schools. Graduation from the college may require another year or more, so that's why I suggest getting the most out of your dual-enrollment time.

Gingersmom,

Thanks for the link. Have you tried UM before? Just wondering where you heard of their classes..

Thanks for the info.

I heard about them on these boards. I also asked about UM on a yahoo homeschool highschool group and got lots of positive feedback.

I really liked what I saw and they were very prompt about answering all my questions that I emailed them.
