They just didn't have the 3rd grade ready when ds was starting 3rd. So we've done Rod and Staff for 3rd and 4th. I haven't seen the 2nd grade one, so I can't comment on it. But I have found Rod & Staff very gentle. They cover a lot of detailed grammar, but incrementally and in small lessons. It's easy to understand.
