Bayt ul-Hikmah
... from my childhood (I grew up in the 80s, but I don't think this book I'm trying to remember was particularly new then). My memories of it are mixed up a bit with A Child's Garden of Verses, and I think this book is also a collection of poetry, or perhaps short stories. It was big and hardcover, and the distinctive part: full of beautiful illustrations of fairies, elves, gnomes and the like, living under mushrooms and in burrows under trees. Does anyone have *any* idea what I'm talking about? It's incredibly difficult to google anything when I have so little to go on. I thought that this board has an impressive collective knowlege, thought someone may have at least an idea. Thanks!!
bethben
There was a book at my aunts house that your description reminded me of. Is it this book? http://www.amazon.com/Gnomes-Wil-Huygen/dp/0810909650 Beth

Bayt ul-Hikmah
Turns out this book has the same illustrator as my childhood copy of A Child's Garden of Verses - hence the connection in my memory.
AnnetteB
Gyo Fujikawa illustrated so many sweet children's books! We have worn out two of the toddler "Babies" books.
