We are planning on BF Early American History next year too, so I've been looking into books I thought would go well. Here are the 2 poetry one's I've bookmarked so far:

Hand in Hand: An American History Through Poetry

My America: A Poetry Atlas of the United States

I think I'll keep an eye on this to see other's suggestions :lurk5:

I'm also going to be doing American history with my first grader next year. Here's what I'm using. Two have already been mentioned. We love, love, love poetry here!

The first two are well-illustrated anthologies. I would have a hard time choosing between them. The first has dates and I like the illustrations better for the second one.

The Oxford Illustrated Book of American Children's Poems

Hand in Hand: An American History Through Poetry

I also plan to use the Poetry for Young People series. The one I'm most looking forward to is Walt Whitman.

Here's a truly wonderful picture book bio about him. The connections it draws between his poetry, the Civil War, and Lincoln make it worth the purchase price.

Walt Whitman: Words For America

For the first year of American history, there are a few others that will work (Emily Dickinson, Edgar Allan Poe...can't remember my others). There are many others for the second year.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one integrating poetry into my elementary American history. Happy planning!

Thank you kindly, Ladies!

I have a few of the Poetry for Young People titles: Dickinson and Frost, I think. They are beautiful. The Oxford book looks very nice, and I am going to look into all the suggestions that were offered.

I think there are a few folks reading, so keep the suggestions coming. :-)

P.S. I just ordered most all the books suggested in the BF primary AH guide plus a few more from Amazon. With the free shipping and "4 for 3" promotion, I felt the price was pretty reasonable.

Between that and my RR order, I am almost set for next year (still needing MUS). Now I can enjoy the rest of *this* year.
