My son is going through beautiful feet American history and he can handle a lot more history books (he’s read all the intermediate ones).  I have this guide and I’m wondering if any might be inappropriate for his age (11.5).  I received excellent advice for other guides.  He probably won’t do American history until high school after this year.

All of this is JMO, but:

Based on not only reading level, but also subject matter for interest level, below is how I would suggest that this booklist falls out. I would say everything in the 4th-5th and 5th-6th categories would be great, and probably the books in the 6th-7th category would be fine -- although Out of the Dust is written in free verse and may be harder to hold interest).

Grade levels above that, Tom Sawyer is at interest level of an 11yo and if he's an advanced reader then the older language/sentence structure and accents probably wouldn't throw him.

If he really loves history, he might enjoy the History of U.S. series.

Anything else at the 7th/8th and above levels are very likely going not going to be at interest level, or have some more mature topics in them.
