Lightening Literature and Oak Meadow Hero's Journey Questions

Hi Curriculum Junkies,

I might be helping homeschool a couple of grandkids, and I could use some input if you've used the above curriculum.

grandkid #1 is a shy, academically insecure rising 7th grader. He likes to read and write, but comprehension is low, and confidence is very low. I was thinking of using either Writing With Ease 4 with him, or Lightening Literature level 6.  

grandkid #2 is an overconfident rising 9th grader who has good overall skills, but needs to be challenged a little, but not too much (she might wilt if too much pressure is applied). I like the looks of Oak Meadow's Hero's Journey for this kid. 

What do you think?
