Anki for Writing Resistant Students

Recommended Posts

My son will be in 9th grade next year and has always been writing resistant. For example, in 4th grade he thought I was torturing him to make him write two or three sentences. We've made good progress since then, but I have to choose assignments carefully. Last year he wrote a fifteen page short story, and I helped him edit it and publish it as an ebook. He is now working on his second one and wants to get it published soon.

He is now at the age where learning to study, instead of just reading books, is becoming important. For science, I have been having him read three pages a day and then either outlining one page (which he hates), writing a summary (which he also dislikes), or writing one paragraph about something interesting from the reading (which he will generally do without complaining). If I try to get him to write anymore about science than that, he starts claiming he hates the work and would rather just read. For the past week, instead of writing, I have been having him make three Anki flashcards from the day's reading. Since that didn't lead to any complaining, I have also started having him make three history flashcards in addition to his current history work.

Most of the Anki threads I've seen on the WTM have been about grades K-8. Has anybody had their high schooler us Anki heavily for science and/or history instead of traditional notetaking? (We've already been using it for years for Spanish with great success.)
