Do threads really have to get rated?

Is it really absolutely necessary that threads get ratings? There is nothing more sad to me on this forum than when someone posts a heartfelt cry for help, a story about a struggle with a kid or their faith, a genuine question about life that they know is a little ignorant and they just want to learn... and someone gives it a single star vote. It just seems so cruel. And I feel like I see it on a lot of such threads. If people were using the thread ratings constantly, then that would be one thing, but it's only used sporadically, meaning that the only time a thread gets rated is when it's super useful, super engaging and the discussion goes on for pages, or when someone wants to be nasty and single star a thread.
