We love HOD and have used BHFHG x3, PHFHG x1, RevtRev x2 (with one more next year), and MtMM x1 (with two more in the next three years).  We skipped CtC and RtR for financial reasons and didn't do the high school years because we wanted a different focus, so I can't speak to whether or not they're enough/solid.  The years we used HOD have gone more smoothly than years we've done my homemade plans; there is a unit study feel that makes it cohesive and alive.  That being said, we use different Bible, language arts, and sometimes a different science, but the price, to me, is still worth it.  The left side of the plans (history) is really where they shine, imo.  There you will find the history readings with assignments, hands-on projects, storytime with questions, a rotating box containing topics such as geography, timeline, research, primary source readings, poetry, and independent study assignments.  The "Key Ideas" are helpful to me if I didn't read the section and want to spark a conversation about the day's reading.  *It is helpful to look at the first week sample as it is representative of the flow for the whole year.*   Also, I love the notebooking!  They are gorgeous and high-quality :).  There is a spot on each two page spread, which covers one 4-day week, for all of the written assignments given on the left side of the guide, so I can open it up and see exactly what has been completed.  If you have any specific questions, I can try to answer them.
