Question for Muslim Boardies

We've been learning about Islam this week.  While covering the 5 Pillars I showed them a documentary video produced by an Islamic man about the Hajj.

The thing that struck me the most is the absolute sheer number of people!  I can't get over how crowded it is.  Just watching the video stresses me out a little bit.  I realize that the Pilgrimage is supposed to be made during a certain time, but I honestly don't know if I could do it if I were Muslim.  That's just SO MANY people!!

So my question is, could you go to all the locations and structures any time or is the communion with others of your faith part of the point?  Google says this year's Hajj is the end of August beginning of September, but could you go now?  Would it count as your 5th Pillar obligation or must you go during the official Hajj?  Have any of you gone?  What was it like?

Sure, Muslims go year-round. The topic you're looking for is called Umrah. It tends to be cheaper and less crowded. It doesn't "count" towards the goal of going to Hajj once in your life, but people like to visit for both spiritual and practical reasons.

Adding--if you're looking for a good general and historical documentary, I recommend PBS's Islam: Empire of Faith. The link takes you to Youtube.

Thank you!
