Guest homeschoolkid
I am a 15 year old girl on a search for some good literature. :) I am hoping for something inspirational, thought provoking, clean, and with a refined writing style that I can learn from, since I enjoy writing. Romance and fantasy are not very interesting to me, and most of the YA ficiton written recently seems shallow. Books that I have enjoyed are Little Women (despite the romance), Horatio Hornblower, Blue Lights by R.M. Ballantyne, Kisses from Katie, and anything by Corrie Ten Boom. I have searched the message boards and I have reserved quite a few from the library, such as God's Smuggler by Brother Andrew, Evidence Not Seen by Darlene Rose, and Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss. I prefer non-fiction, but as in the case of Horatio Hornblower, I learned a great deal about ships and writing battle scenes, so I am open to fiction. Thank you very much for any suggestions! almondbutterandjelly
My 9th grader loves Heidi. (She also enjoyed the whole Little Women series, so that's why I suggested it.) (She is also not interested in romance books.)
3sapphires
My 10th grader (who has never been able to tolerate YA) would recommend A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.
scholastica
You might enjoy Willa Cather's novels I would start with My Antonia. Also, you are at a great age for Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
