In our home we emphasize that NOTHING that goes out is guaranteed private. So if you wouldn't want someone else to see it, don't put it out there. DH and I don't keep our passwords from each other, (although everytime I need him to pull up my email and print something he has to be reminded that he does know the password), and are open with all our electronics/Internet usage in general. So far the idea that we expect that transparency to extend to the kids has been well received.

 

To me texts are the modern equivalent of passing a note in class. Once that paper leaves your hand you have no controll over the privacy of that information. Of course, I am the student who drew a funny picture of the teacher, showed it to the student next to me, then watched in horror as it was passed around the room and confiscated by the teacher. Yep. Fourth grade was a year the principle and I spent quality time together. Good times.
