Greta
I'm in charge of my parish library, and I really don't know what I'm doing. The library has a practically-antique computer with a really out-dated and difficult to use database that has an inventory of the library. But it's something that I can barely use myself, and is definitely NOT accessible to parishioners who simply want to find out if we have a certain book and if so where to find it. We also have a small parish with a proportionately small budget, so I would most likely pay for any new software and hardware out of pocket, rather than asking the parish to fund it. Is there an easy, inexpensive way that I could put the library inventory online, so that parishioners could check it from home? Or is there a better way to manage a small library? Thanks for any help. I'm at a loss!
Greta
Would LibraryThing work for this? I like that it's online, and I like that it's very affordable. But I'm not getting a very clear picture of how it works.
athomeontheprairie
Library thing was also my suggestion. If you have a smart phone, you can use it to scan the barcodes. (If you don't already have a scan gun) How many volumes are you considering "small"? Is the library in use? If it doesn't have a lot of use, our is very small, maybe a spread sheet with titles and author?

You know, I don't even know how many volumes we have, but I would guess in the vicinity of 500-700. The library is in use right now, with just a very simple paper tracking system regarding which volumes have been checked out and by whom. I thought about the spreadsheet idea, but since I'm a Mac user and most people use PC's, I was afraid it would be a pain. I don't have a scan gun, but depending on the cost, I might get one if it would make the job easier. I don't have a smartphone either, but I do have an iPad with a camera -- I'll try to find out if that would work. Thank you again!
