Melissa B
I would like to incorporate the NFL season into our school work. I was thinking maybe statistics, graphing, probability. Does anyone do this with sports? If so, what have you done?
MyThreeSons
There is lots of math and science in sports, as you've already noted. In addition, Geography comes into play as you follow a team throughout the season. There's plenty of history as well. And you can use articles written by sportswriters as the jumping-off place for Language Arts lessons. There are sports novels written for everyone from young children thru adults. (The adult ones can contain some inappropriate material, though.) You can even incorporate art and music. It would take a lot of work to make something like this a complete curriculum, but if your student is really interested in it, you could easily make it a unifying theme. St. Theophan Academy
Here is a great blog post with ideas that use geography and Monday night football that you might like to check out - Real Learning
ekarl2
There's a literature tie, too. The Baltimore Ravens are named for the Edgar Allan Poe poem. In fact, they have three mascots, ravens, whose names are Edgar, Allan, and Poe. Cool, huh?
