Opinions on IEW's Fix It program

Recommended Posts

I haven't used it yet but plan to. It looks like an awesome program. Basically the kids learn grammar through editing. There are 5 stories, you print out what the student is working on and they have to find the mistakes. You can then circle the mistakes and let them look up the grammar rule. It's 5 years worth of grammar, the book is the TM and you print off the lessons- so from an economical pov it's inexpensive. I heard the author speak about it and I'm jazzed about getting started with it!

and I think it is a good program so far. It makes him really look at the sentences given and hunt down the errors.

In some ways, though, I'm thinking that calling it "grammar" is not really the right name for it. There is no identification of parts of speech and no diagramming. It works more like the Critical Thinking Editor In Chief books, but the assignments are broken down into small daily chunks, which is helpful for us.

While I do like it, I think that if your goal is to have your child learn the grammar terms, then you would need to supplement with something else. If you goal is just to have him recognize errors and be able to correct them, then it might be OK.
