More hidden allergies discovered...and asthma

Not too long ago I posted about how well my biggest dd has been doing. After being sick for her high school years, she went of to college last year and was successful in a very tough program and met a lot of nice friends. Things are going well, so I can't complain, but something new has come up.

She was trying to exercise this summer but she made no progress. She could run for maybe a minute max after several weeks of swimming and walk/runs. I had been thinking of getting her allergy tested since three of my other children were found to have completely unknown allergies last winter. I finally made an appointment knowing they would do some lung testing, too. Dd went yesterday and had positive tests to several foods including milk, wheat, and eggs. But she also has asthma and we never knew. I think of all the years she felt awful and the asthma could have had something to do with it. I feel really rotten about that...but it's not as though this kid didn't see many specialist during her sick years.

I want to make the point that all my kids have stomach issues, and for years relatives and doctors tried to blame it on ANXIETY. They just had hidden food allergies. And even the times they felt like they couldn't get a good breath, people would say it was ANXIETY and I accepted that. Now I want to kick myself.

One other little point, the two kids who tested positive for both wheat and milk allergies were the ones who were very intense and prone to meltdowns as children in case anyone is interested. The kids who do not have a milk allergy were always much calmer. I'm just throwing that out there in case it might help someone.

So sorry! At least you know now.

On the anxiety, FWIW, the vagus nerve is a two-way street! I've been doing a lot of reading lately and I am far more inclined to guess that much anxiety is the result of what is going on with the gut rather than the cause.

I don't know much about the vagus nerve--cool, something new to learn!--but I remember reading something not that long ago by a doctor, I think, who believes there is always a physical cause of anxiety. So much research is now being done on that gut-brain connection. Finally.
