GrammarGirl
I have CLP's Building Spelling Skills but am not a fan of the 20-word lists. I thought of eliminating some of the words, but then the exercises will not work. I've looked at R&S 2nd grade spelling and believe DD can handle it since she's a confident reader, but what other options should I consider? (I don't think AAS will work for us.) clemota
Sequential Spelling starts with a 4-word list but is already up to 20 words by day 5. Most of them build off of words previously learned (be, begin, begins, beginning, etc), so it may be a pain to have to eliminate words from the list every day just to come up with a basic list of 10 or so. I like Evan Moor's Building Spelling Skills. The lists for first grade start out small (5 words) and builds up to 8 or 9 words by the end of the year. Second grade lists have 10 set words. Third has 15. I like that they include sentence dictation as a part of each week, as spelling within a sentence is a whole 'nother ballgame than spelling a list of words. In fact the SeqSpell teacher guide does give advice on customizing the lists. The lists build on each other, but nothing will be lost from the lesson by cutting the list in half, omitting some words, adding others.
