Birds of Prey study???

Recommended Posts

My son is looking to do an in depth study on Birds of Prey. I am having trouble brainstorming ideas that are for this level, and everything I find in a search is for the younger folks. He has said he does not want to dissect another owl pellet ;)

He wants to dig deep. Any ideas? I'm looking for books, documentaries, etc. Oh, and any literature that might have a bird of prey as the focus - all I've come up with is My Side of the Mountain & the two sequels.

Would he enjoy researching falconry and the history of it along with the My Side book? I think there was an interesting news article floating around about some tribe in Asia and falconry--seems like girls are being allowed to study the skill for the first time, and one of the best students right now is female.

Could he study wild bird rehabilitation? The best presentation I ever saw about raptors was from The Raptor Project, which was a NY state thing. They travelled to schools, and I saw their presentation in a shopping mall of all places when I was in college. They set up shop in an empty store for a short time. They rehabilitated injured birds if possible, but if they couldn't survive in the wild, the birds became part of the education project. Some reasons for not being able to make it in the wild were permanent injury (missing parts of wings), visual problems, etc. Oh, they mentioned that birds of prey are making a comeback in cities (this was a decade and a half ago), so maybe he could study urban bird populations and how birds of prey survive and adapt to that environment.
