It approaches the material from more of a thinking perspective, not a procedural perspective. As for whether to use on level or behind I think that really depends on the child. I have been able to get mine used but in "like new' condition through Amazon and other sources. In fact, I haven't had to pay for hardly any Math in Focus materials at full price. I would probably not have purchased most of the MiF stuff if I had to pay full price. FWIW, I got the textbooks for very, very little used and in "like new" condition, too.
