Seasider
I am investigating resources for some high school student council training. I am not looking for theoretical/philosophical leadership books. I am more interested in transmitting PRACTICAL leadership skills, ie, running a meeting, organizing an event, working with committee structures, engaging class participation, that kind of thing. So, two questions for the hive: 1 - Do you know of any curriculum out there that focuses on these topics? 2 - What skills did I not mention that would be helpful? Any other insights you could share would be appreciated! Seems like the kids are currently expected to know/develop these skills in sink-or-swim fashion; I'd like to offer some materials to take out some of the stress and guesswork so they can move on to using their time and energy productively. Thanks! (X posting to high school board)
Denise in Florida
Toastmasters International has a youth leadership program. I don't know if you have to join a group or if you can just buy the materials 4H teaches youth leadership. Most counties have a youth council and follow a formal protocol for leading meetings, keeping records and minutes. I know they sell their materials online at 4H Mall. You could also just get a copy of Robert's rules of order as a good starting place.
Seasider
Thanks for the recommendations. I don't think this particular group needs to follow Robert's strictly, but a relaxed format may help. Thanks for the 4H links and Toastmasters rec, I will take a look.
