Re: A Program for High-Achieving Girls with Interest in STEM Fields

Rensselaer is pleased to extend an invitation to your most talented high school junior girls (or sophomore girls on an accelerated math or science track) to participate in our annual Design Your Future Day program on Saturday, April 20, 2013. The program is FREE for 100 female students who are interested and eligible.

Eligibility criteria: By the time they’ve graduated from high school, students should have:

ï‚· Earned A and B grades

ï‚· Completed four years of math through pre-calculus

ï‚· Completed three years of science, including chemistry and physics

ï‚· Completed an introductory programming class in C, C++, or JAVA.

This FREE daylong program is designed to support the national effort to increase the number of women pursuing careers in engineering, science, and technology. In 2011, women were 51% of the national workforce, but represented only 14% of architects and engineers, 25% of computer and mathematical occupations, 28.9% in the environmental and geophysical sciences, and 34% of physicians and surgeons. More women are needed in the aforementioned fields to provide diversity of thought and innovative ideas that will help to positively impact our world.

Design Your Future Day offers fun and exciting hands-on workshops that introduce high school girls to a wide variety of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) degree programs and career options by providing hands-on experiences in Rensselaer’s laboratories and classrooms. The program also provides an opportunity to meet high school and college women who have already decided to pursue STEM careers and to find out how these students are preparing themselves for the 21st century workplace.

Interested students and parents should complete the two-page registration form located at

http://www.eng.rpi.edu/dyfd/.'>http://www.eng.rpi.edu/dyfd/.'>http://www.eng.rpi.edu/dyfd/.'>http://www.eng.rpi.edu/dyfd/. The form requires a parental signature. The completed form should be faxed to Barbara Ruel at 518-276-8788 or scanned and sent as a .pdf attachment to ruelb@rpi,edu.

The registration deadline is by 5 p.m. on April 12, however, the program may fill before that date. Because the program fills quickly and because capacity is limited to 100 students, students are encouraged to promptly complete and return their registration forms.

A confirmation letter will be mailed directly to the student’s home address, thus, legibility is critical.

The program for students begins at 8:30 a.m. with check-in, includes a free lunch, and ends at 3:00 p.m. There’s a panel for parents at 1:30 p.m. Campus tours for parents and daughters are available from 3 to 4 p.m.

More information about program content, schedule, driving directions, parking, and general information can be found on the program web site located at http://www.eng.rpi.edu/dyfd/.

Please feel free to telephone me directly at 518-276--2618 or write to me at ruelb@rpi.edu should you have questions about the program.
