HSinNH
Good morning! I am looking for something short (2-4 weeks) for a 4th and 6th grader that includes reading and briefly analyzing some poems, learning a few poetic devices such as rhyme scheme and meter, and then guiding them through writing some of their own poems in different forms. Basically, a nice introduction to poetry would be perfect. I have found units on writing poetry or analyzing poetry, but nothing all in one package. Does anyone know of something like this? Currclick, perhaps? TIA!!
shell0830
Moving Beyond the Page has a Poetry unit for ages 9-11 that my dd is enjoying. We are doing it for 3 weeks. It combines learning about poetic terms and writing poetry. It ends with a project of putting on a "poetry night" like a coffee shop. yperalta
For the past two years I have used Evan Moors poetry booklets that are available for several grade ranges and now I am exploring activities and exercises as described in Kim Addonizio's book, Ordinary Genius A Guide for the Poet Within, It's just excellent! The Evan Moor books are a great place to begin with poems, 5 multiple choice questions per poem, dialogue about the poem and additional exercises. Crimson Wife
Figuratively Speaking has a section on poetry and is a great intro to literary terms workbook for those grades.
