lewelma
After watching "the Planet Earth", my ds is insterested in that area of science. It has to do with how the environment/weather affects the life of the animals. What type of science is this, ecology, topography, environmental science, or something else? I have not seen "the Planet Earth", but the science you describe is Ecology - how plants and animals interact with each other and the environment in which they live. Population Ecology asks what affect the size of populations - weather, competition, or factors internal to the species. Behavioral Ecology asks what affects the behavior of animals. Community ecology asks how all the different aspects of a community work together along with the environment. Environmental Science has more of a human focus than Ecology, and thus is more political. My PhD is in Ecology, so if you have any other questions, I'm happy to answer them. Ruth in NZ Edited August 7, 2012 by lewelma
alwaysinhiskeeping
Wow! Thanks. Are you aware of any curriculum for high schooler?
lewelma
Biozone has modular textbooks that cover many different biology topics including ecology, evolution, and environmental science. They keep the costs down by making thing black and white so that they can update them for little cost on a regular basis. The website has nice samples to look at and quite a few of them are available on Amazon US for $10. I have used the evolution book and was VERY impressed. http://www.biozone.co.nz/modular.php Ruth in NZ
Guest EnviroFan
If your child is really passionate about the environment you might consider a semester school like Coastal Studies for Girls (for 10th grade girls), Chewonki Semester School (10th or 11th grade coed) or Conserve School (10th or 11th grade coed). All of these schools have strong ecology programs that are delivered over 16 weeks. They offer scholarships as well. If you aren't familiar with semester schools you might take a look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semester_school. Another great resource for connecting kids with ecology are some of the programs like Journey North (http://www.learner.org/jnorth/) that get kids involved with migrations and tracking the seasonal ecological changes in their own backyards and around the world. Best of Luck!
