Has anyone heard of Glass Analysis Decoding Program?

Recommended Posts

A psychologist we have been consulting with has recommended some different programs for ds, such as Barton, Wilson, Great Leaps, and REWARDS. I have heard of all of those and can easily find reviews from users. However, he mentioned a program I have never read about before called Glass Analysis for Decoding. It is an older program, from the '70s I think (this psychologist is actually older than dirt, so he has been around a long time).

This program is not for reading, it is strictly for decoding and can be combined with other programs. It focuses on word patterns, not rule memorization. You essentially teach your child to scan unknown words for common spelling patterns. It sounds pretty straight forward and easy to implement and it really focuses on over learning the patterns. Decoding kits are available that contain cluster packs, teacher guides, and practice books:http://glassanalysis.com/

I found a current review here: http://edutopia.org/groups/literacy/96999

It is hard to find a lot of info since it is an old program. I did find word lists from Glass Analysis on this site: http://getthinkingworks.com/glassDetails.html I may use the word lists from this site since they are free, but I am interested in the whole program, including the supplemental work books and flash cards. Unfortunately, the Glass Analysis site doesn't really show any good samples of their product.

I keep looking for something quick and easy to use over the summer with ds, especially since oldest ds (autism) will be home from ps. I plan on really focusing on his needs since he has not made much progress this year in ps.

I would love to hear from anyone who has used this program. If you have time and are interested, please check out the websites and tell me what you think. Thanks!! :001_smile:
