sweetsouthern
dd had her psychological testing about 2 months back, but im confused on one "diagnosis". shes 11 next week, the diagnosed her adhd severe impulsivity, pdd-nos, mood disorder-nos and have her going next month for further testing for aspergers (which im betting she is). they said she had slow processing speed. i can presume i understand what that means lol! especially homeschooling her, i know info is processed slow and extra time is needed with everything. but does that mean she has auditory processing disorder or sensory processing disorder??? both maybe?? or neither?? like.. in psychological terms, what exactly does slow processing mean, what can i do to help it.?????? momma aimee
it means, as explained to me by our PhD, just that 'slow processing' the end result of the processing is not effect (by the speed) but the brain take longer to 'sort it out and put it together' internally. my son is also SPD -- but the 2 are, to my understanding, unrelated. Misty
It just means that her brain takes longer to sort through the information. That said, my daughter (10) who has been identified by a neuropsych as having "slow processing speed across the board" also has figure-ground auditory processing disorder. So there could be a connection in some kids. Don't think it means your daughter is not smart though. My daughter's IQ is in the 140's. Just takes her longer to access it! sweetsouthern
ok i see.... i guess what my main "problem" is (or just the fact that its bugging me lol!) is that theres no actual learning disability diagnosis given for her. not that i need an IEP or anything, but she is clearly two grades behind and we have struggles with school on a daily basis, so there has to be reasons for it. besides my hunches and guesses at her issues, i really have no clue what im up against school wise. does that make any sense??
Momto3indians
...what could be more safer for your daughter and her level of learning or speed of learning than to be homeschooled? Just take one day at a time...find her tutors where tutors are needed. (my one son is dyslexic and by 4th grade still had a 1st grade reading level...he couldn't read anything aloud nor assimilate it because of the stress it was causing) I heard about an amazing reading specialist in my area...took him to her for six weeks and held him back for a year....that specialist found his 'nitch' of what he needed to boost his reading level and just that year to relax totally did the trick. For him...once his reading level went to highschool level (things just clicked one day for him) in 6th grade, I bumped him back up to his normal grade level. He is nearly a college grad now...working the hardest amongst all my kids and making A's...which just tells me he is giving it his all. Homeschooling allowed him elbow room to grow...in his own time...and he did!
