Streams of Civilization?

Recommended Posts

Am I the only one who's 6th grader is just not ready for the level of reading found in Streams? This is a bright kid. (but then again, aren't they all?) We are following TOG and he is able to read and understand any of the other books I give him, but Streams...oh my goodness. I've even started to read it out loud to him and there are times I have to think for a few moments about what is being said.

3 weeks in and I'm ready to toss that book! Does it get easier or is it time to just let it go?

Oh, and I'm one of those people that gives others the advice of, "If it isn't working then change to something that does." Maybe time to follow my own advice?

Considering that I believe it is meant for high school, I would read this text aloud and discuss. It is not the words but the style that is cumbersome. Some call the style and structure dry, but I consider it advanced presentation very similar to college texts or encyclopedic resources. I use sections for read aloud at the fifth grade level. I also use some of the information boxes for copywork. :)

I had a fifth grader reading it last year, but generally small sections at a time. It's a great source for outlining, too. That said, if you are hitting a wall with it, perhaps the Kingfisher or Usborne encyclopedia would be a better fit.

This is funny you are posting this...as my dd is currently using this resource.

My dd is using BF Ancients guide and she was able to outline very easily with this book... however if you but Kingfisher in front of her she looks at you like a deer in headlights  then comes the waterworks!

The only complain so far from her is that they are long chapters and she finds then boring... however if I put a living book in her hands she is good to go.... :001_smile:
