mommyoftwinboys
Thank you everyone for all your help so far as a newbie homeschooler next fall I really appreciate it! I've got some great lists compiled of read alouds with the family next year, but have yet seen any lists for independant reading for 1st grade. Do you have any suggestions for independant reading books for my boys. FYI: they do read already I'm assuming at grade level(they are in school this year) Thanks so much! Rhesa
Along with the above mentioned books, here are some that my son enjoyed this past year for 1st grade: Lots and Lots of Let's-Read-and-Find-Out science series books Billy and Blaze series (CW Anderson)*** Julius (Syd Hoff) Harry the Dirty Dog*** Magic Tree House Series (not great literature, but he voraciously read these and they gave him lots of confidence to enjoy reading) Geronimo Stilton (he's only read a few of these) Frog & Toad books (Arnold Lobel)*** Andrew Lost series Secret Agent Jack Stalwart series (Elizabeth Singer Hunt) Spiderwick series These are all free time reading, I've marked the books that are higher quality with ***. The others are just freebies. But he's a good reader, and we have done lots and lots of non-fiction as well. Check at your local library if you can, they should have some readers in various levels. Good luck!
Lovedtodeath
My DD loves these books http://www.tanglewoodeducation.com/bksrd.htm
jail warden
This is a great reading list! I use it for my kids. You can use different years if your kids read better or not. This is from the Latin School. HTH!
Asma_08
These are great suggestions. How many books do your first graders read each year?
Lovedtodeath
It really depends on your child's reading level. Most programs assign 10 pages a day of easy readers (less than a paragraph per page). I aim for 10 pages every 2-3 days. So how many books depends on the book and the child. We also read together with Mom doing one page, child doing the next. Clear as mud!!
