Gwen in VA
We are putting together an untraditional "portfolio" for my son as part of his college application. He has done numerous hands-on projects that are relevant to the field he is going into, and in his case a picture truly is worth a thousand words. The portfolio as planned will contain a small amount of narrative to provide background info for the various sections, with the rest pictures and copies of reviews and articles about ds's work. Question -- for this type of unusual portfolio, should the (small amount of) narrative be in the third person or in the first person? (Ds and dh and I are collaborating on the writing) Pro for the first person -- it is my son's story. Con for the first person -- pretty obviously, this is a project at least partially assembled by a parent. Pro for the third person -- this is a parent-supervised project Con for the third person -- it sounds awkward, and ds will have enough to do with it that I feel I'm shortchanging his contribution to write in the third person. Thoughts? Is there a standard way of doing this, or is this unusual enough that we get to write our own rules? Any pros and cons I haven't listed?
