The articles that I've read, (and knowing her) she's a recluse, the kid isn't fed well and wasn't allowed outside much, if at all. (a neighbor said that he didn't even know that a kid lived there) While the dad had him for his last visit he had him in preschool and changed his diet and encouraged him to play outside. I think that the "norm" is to assume that the child is best off with the mom, but I'm pretty sure that's not the case here. It's sad all around.
