momtotkbb
I have two boys that are wanting to do Lego robotics this school year. Before I hit purchase I want to be sure I will have everything I need. For 7th grader: LEGO MINDSTORMS Education NXT Homeschool Pack http://www.legoeducation.us/eng/product/lego_mindstorms_education_nxt_homeschool_pack/1303 Homeschool NXT Activity Extension Pack http://www.legoeducation.us/eng/product/homeschool_nxt_activity_extension_pack/1567 Then I will pick up the Mayan Adventure and King's Treasure from Amazon. For 2nd grader: WeDo pkg: http://www.legoeducation.us/eng/product/lego_education_wedo_robotics_homeschool_pack/1736 Are these 3 sets all I need to get started? My thinking was that I could then add for 8th grade to the curriculum materials for Mindstorm or even for high school if we wanted. Thanks in Advance

RahRah
I've done LEGO robotics with groups of kids - depending on your second grader, the WeDo set may or may not be too easy....what you might want to do is start with the MindStorms and see how he does with that with his brother and if the WeDo is a better fit, then spend the money for that. I've had kids as young as five doing MindStorms - it really depends on the kid!
WVNA
I'm actually going to be coaching a FLL team for homeschool children this fall. We've been meeting this summer and even our "junior" members(kids less than 9 years old) have been using the mindstorms kit. They haven't had any problems with it. They have needed people to hold their hands on the programming part, but I've used that as an opportunity for the older kids to teach the younger ones which benefits everybody. momtotkbb
After reading a few other Lego posts I considered letting little bit use the Mindstorms - but, it's a sibling rivalry thing. So I think it will be better for this year to have my 2nd grader do the WeDo's and the older one the Mindstorm. My 2nd grader likes legos - but he's not in love with them as much as his two older brothers were at his age. He still likes his Playmobils so I think the WeDo's will work for him.
