Should I start with SOTW 1 for a K/1St and 4th grader?

This will be my 1st year homeschooling. I am not sure if I should start off with SOTW 1 with my 2 sons (5 almost 6 and 9). I want to follow SWB's book, but I am confused since my 5 yo can't read, I know that is my 1st priority with him, as are math and the other basics. I am not sure I would really classify him as a 1st grader, even though he went through Kinder in a PS this past year.:001_huh: OR, should I start history out where my older son (9) should be(following SWB's method), and start out with Modern History, then next year, start with Ancients? Please help!!

I would think Ancients would be good to start? I'm not the best to answer this question, though! Hopefully others will chime in with real experience!

I'm calling my 5yo's grade K-5 because she can't read yet, either (even has problems with CVC words). She'll be 6 in Jan. Also, her math will be K level. I know, though, that she'll learn a lot from our history and science times, even though she can't read or write well because history and science are fact-based, not skills-based.

HTH a little!

I am basically doing this. Technically a 1st and 3rd grader but what do grades mean anymore, right? I have one that just turned 6 and one that will be 9 in September so almost exactly your kids' ages.

This is the one thing I am really doing *together* with both kids and I am looking forward to it!

Your kids are a bit older than mine, but we downloaded the audio version of SOTW and all my kids love it. We aren't doing anything structured with it, we're just using it as a fun distraction in the car. They're definitely absorbing more than I thought because they will ask specific questions about what they've listened to. I figure it's a great way to expose them to the information before we start something more structured.
