Looking for favorite read alouds

I have been rereading the early years section of TWTM and luckily I have several of the books mentioned as read alouds and lots of other books too. Just didn't have the heart to get rid of them after the boys got older.

I found Stuart Little, The Book of Dragons, Mr. Popper's Penguins, The Little Princess, Alice in Wonderland, Mary Poppins along with the Narnia series. I'm not sure which ones to start with. My experience has been with boys. My daughter is a girlie girl but loves dragons and other things because of her brothers.

So, what are some of your favorites for 5 year old girls? They can be picture books or not. Doesn't matter. My daughter does not like Fancy Nancy so I'll be getting rid of all of those. She did enjoy them but not any more. I'm thinking a few picture books but more of the longer read alouds.

Beatrix Potter especially Two Bad Mice (because of the dollhouse)

Mrs. Tiggy Winkle

Peter Rabbit --I even had memorized and years later, as a grad student, met another person in Boston who could also still recite those passages!

Dr. Doolittle

Just So Stories

House at Pooh Corner

Trumpet of the Swan

Make Way for Ducklings

Blueberries for Sal

One Morning in Maine

The Little House

The Tale of Despereaux was a favorite. This made a BIG impression on my sensitive, little girl.

We listened to all of EB White's books on audio cd. He is incredible. I'd get the versions read by him himself. Note: I didn't like Stuart Little as much as Trumpet of the Swan and Charlotte's Web, though.

Actually, we took a field trip to Boston Public Gardens after listening to Trumpet of the Swan. Very cool. http://www.veronicaboulden.com/2010/07/were-headed-to-boston-for-day-we-just.html and http://www.veronicaboulden.com/2010/07/we-took-field-trip-to-bostons-public.html

All of the Narnia books and the Little House books are great for that age, too.

These stories are great fuel for the imaginations and good food for their spirits!

Some books on my to-read list include: Mr. Poppers Penguins, A Dog Called Kitty, Summer of the Monkeys, Wind in the Willows, The House at Pooh Corner and Family Under the Bridge.

I've got to get crackin!!!! :D
