Literature: 6th grade level

Hi. I'm looking for books at a 6th grade level for my ds's independent reading list for next year. 7th grade level is fine too, I suppose, but my goal is mostly 6th grade level novels. I keep plugging books into the Scholastic book wizard and everything I put in is at a 5th grade level - just rotten luck, I guess. When I use it to search for books at a 6th or 7th grade level, I get some books I can use, but a lot of books I'd rather not.

If you are not trying to coordinate this with history, I would google "Classical Christian (if you are Christian) School 6th grade reading list". I have done that before when looking for lists for my kids. Several should pop up. Even if they are shorter summer reading lists, you can combine to make a good sized list. If you are following WTM history rotation, the lists are included in the book.

I wouldn't take reading level very seriously. Readability indexes usually come from a simple formula where the average numbers of letters per word and words per paragraph are calculated. It's unlikely a book listed at a reading level of 5.0 is noticeably any easier to one at 6.0. And really... once your child is reading fluently, it doesn't really matter what grade level the books are... I'd look for content and writing style over reading level.
