Wendi
My son will be in 9th grade next year. He hasn't done a lot of writing this year, and I want to have him do some writing over the summer to "warm up" for doing MFW AHL starting in the fall. I thought it would be good if I could assign paragraphs and short essays during the summer, with the goal of discussing and practicing without worrying about grades. So I wondered if there are any resources that would give me some ideas for assignments. I'm thinking of both factual and opinion based writing. Like: Write a paragraph describing your favorite TV show. Write a paragraph convincing someone to vote for XXX candidate. What is the theme of your favorite movie? Explain. What qualities are important in a friend? What makes someone a hero? Use some examples from movies or books. If you could change anything about our church, what would you change? If you could design a town or neighborhood, what would you include? Why should people care about protecting animals or the environment? Should all American adults vote? Write a short report on the works of Hayao Miyazaki. Explain what you like about your favorite style of music. Basically persuasive writing, literary and movie analysis, stating an opinion and backing it up. Sometimes just a paragraph, other times an essay. I'd like to keep the topics interesting to him, as my goal is for him to enjoy and building confidence in his writing. (He's an Aspie, and doesn't want to do anything he thinks he's not good at.)
