Help to improve reading scores on ACT

Recommended Posts

Is it a time issue or a content issue? If you aren't sure, have your student take a practice "real" test using a timer, but without time constraints. Just have them mark where they were when the timer went off.

If they can do well on the test at their own pace, then you just need to work on timing. Doing regular practice sessions like this worked for middle son (who never finished the test prior to several practice sessions).

If they finish ok or don't do well even without the time constraints, then it's content. For that, more vocab and a wider reading "list" in general tends to help. Sometimes kids in this category read very little in general OR too much in one or two narrow categories. A wide range with a bit of varied vocab works best. Make certain they look up or know the vocab words in the reading. Youngest son is really good at reading words and not caring if he knows what they all mean! (He's getting better with it though.)
