nellecv
I'm trying to teach myself Latin (got to keep ahead of the kids! :) but I'm just not good with languages. I'm using Wheelock's Latin, and the workbook, and a website with accompanying exercises, but I'm still struggling to remember all the grammar rules and forms. Any suggestions for either strategies or materials? My brain is crying here!
Elizabeth in WA
I find that writing out the tables in the back of Wheelocks improves memory of the forms. (And not just for me, for the kids as well...) We began with 1st declension noun forms and added new forms as we mastered previous forms beginning with review tables (no peeking) each day, and loosely following the order in the textbook. We try to focus on which case and what it means as we write each line. Verb tables are trickier because you can't get all the tenses onto a single notebook page, but still essentially same thing...rote practice with declensions and conjugations. Flashcards help with vocabulary. Knowing the declensions and conjugations cold, along with the meanings of words, greatly eases translating. I also like using Lingua Latina as a reader. It really helps with the ability to sweep up entire Latin sentences as units of meaning instead of translating everything before understanding it. Lawana
This is a memory first method you might find interesting. http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~wcd/Latin.htm
