After a 6 1/2-year trip and 4.9 BILLION miles...

not to mention tricky maneuvering to avoid being caught in the sun's gravitational pull, NASA's Messenger probe is now in Mercury's orbit. :hurray: And you thought road trips in the car with kids were long!! :D

I just think it's so amazing the science and technology that went into realizing this mission. Pretty cool! :)

Really cool. It looks exactly as I imagined. :)

 

To me, it looks like a big rock almost like the moon but more rocky than sandy. I get taken aback when I see the pictures of the planet and then the blackness of space all around it. Something about it always makes me feel like I need to gasp for air. I try imagine what it must be for the astronauts who do "space walks" and are just OUT THERE in all that black. It must be so scary! :eek: Pretty amazing what science has done. It boggles the mind. :)
