Would like input on lit choices

Recommended Posts

My plans are for ds to read 12-14 books over 2 semesters (evenly split between American and British lit)), along with some short stories and poetry for each. He is not the reader that his older siblings are -- not that he can't understand, just that he doesn't enjoy classics unless read aloud, and even then, they are far from his favorites. These are some I'm thinking of:

American

To Kill a Mockingbird

The Old Man and the Sea

Adventures of Tom Sawyer

British

Frankenstein

The Time Machine

The Moonstone

A Tale of Two Cities

Animal Farm

Any suggestions for books that are interesting yet challenging, but not too hard and heavy?

Short stories by Jack London

Thornton Wilder The Bridge of San Luis Rey, The 8th Day

John Steinbeck Grapes of Wrath (if you think it's too heavy, try Of Mice and Men)

Oscar Wilde The Canterville Ghost, Importance of being Earnest

For poetry, try some Tennyson and Robert Frost

Good suggestions. We read Call of The Wild and White Fang earlier this year and enjoyed them!

We liked Poe and Hawthorne and Hemingway and some F. Scott Fitzgerald stories. For newer stuff we are reading Slaughterhouse 5 and The Interpreter of Maladies. Our latest big book has been "Invisible Man".

My dd liked Dickens stories more than the novels. She loved Pride and Prejudice. She liked British plays from all eras (she says the comedy and tragedy in them feels more "real").
