I would think you would want the actual sandpaper line to be wide enough for the finger to get a good feel as he traces. I made some (about 18 yrs ago) and stuck them on a 4x6 index card, so I would guess the letters were around 3x5, but this was just me, it wasn't because I read somewhere they had to be that big.
