For those of you who keep reading logs what information to you record? We do not have any reporting requirements in our state but I would like to keep track anyway. Right now we have the obvious - title, author and year of publication. Anything else?

I also keep track of books that were favorites or books that we absolutely hated. It's a very minimal rating system - just a star for favorites and a down arrow for bombs.

I include the date the book was finished and (for my youngest) the reading level of the book.

I also record number of pages (if it's a chapter book), genre (whether it's history, science, biography, fiction), and I'll record reading level (using Scholastic's website).

I used to give my kids the option to draw a picture - when it was their very first books. Now, I let them dictate a few sentences about the book. Did they like it? If so, why? Soon, that may switch to them writing it themselves.

I have separate pages for Read Alouds, Audio Books, Fiction, Science, and History. For each book, I write the author, title, picture or chapter book (abbreviated with P or C), date read, and the subject area if it is science or history (e.g., "human body" or "pilgrims"). It is really nice to have and doesn't take much time. I think it will be a huge help once my 2nd dc is in school too.
