Saxon K

Do you need to purchase the manipulatives package for Saxon K, or can you improvise or purchase items as you go along?

 

It looks like I currently have some of the items that are in the set.

 

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I bought the manipulatives set as that is the main focus for the K program (no workbook to use!). If you already have some of the manipulatives, then perhaps you could purchase the rest individually on Rainbow Resources. They really are fun :001_smile:

I only bought the pattern blocks. I used legos for the linking cubes, made my own geoboard out of plywood and paneling nails, copied a friend's tangram set in foam, and used miniature toy animals for the teddy bear counters. I think that's all the major stuff we've used . . .

 

Oh, and we already had a clock, though it isn't geared.

Oh yes , you can improvize and use other things :>) I bought most of my own stuff seperately or just used legos or other toys I have around the house . Completely doable .

We didn't do Saxon K, but many of the manipulatives are the same for 1st. We used Duplos for linking cubes but I did buy the pattern blocks. As for geoboards, I kept putting off buying them, then decided they weren't really necessary. There was only one lesson where it would have been nice to have one, but my kids understand shapes so I don't think it harmed them. We also already had a teaching clock. I didn't see the need to buy a second one as the book suggests.

 

Rainbow Resource used to have a chart in their catalog showing which manipulatives were optional and which were mandatory and how many years they would be used. I haven't looked to see if they have it on their website but that might be helpful to you.
