motherdear
What ages are the different volumes for? Is SOTW audio set w/ actiivity guide enough for grades 6/7/8? What activity/idea book(s) would compiment it best? Any other suggestions? Our situation: We need to simplify as we have to do a 4 day week next year. I was thinking SOTW audio with notebooking and an activity sprinkled here and there, as well as living books tht relate to subject. Would Winter Promise notebooking and/or HS in the Woods be a good combo? Open to ideas. TIA MJ

I would not use SOTW 1 with an 8th grader, at least not as the main spine. SOTW Vol 1 is designed primarily for grades 1-4 Vol 2 is designed primarily for grades 2-5 Vol 3 grades 3-7 Vol 4 grades 4-8 However, kids are all unique so you'll have to decide what works for you. But, that's what the AG for the different volumes says. I used Vol 1 this year with my youngers and let the olders listen in (when they wanted to). But, they also read from another spine (k12's Human Odyssey) and did outlining and timelines from KFH and wrote summaries, did maps and kept a notebook as outlined in the WTM logic stage recommendations. If you really like SOTW then you might look into Sonlight's Cores 6 & 7. They use SOTW as their spines (all 4 volumes in 2 years) and add in tons of living books & historical fiction to round it out. These cores are aimed at middle school aged kids. YMMV. Good luck finding something suitable for your family!
