sbgrace
My inlaws want to purchase McGuffey's readers for my kids. I know some sets are phonetic and some whole word but I can't find original edition dates to know which is which. Can anyone link me the phonetic ones on Amazon (or elsewhere)? ....
Hi. I have these. The McGuffey's Eclectic Readers: Revised Editions. The K-6 Readers are sold together as a set for about 35-45 bucks on Rainbow Resource and Amazon. I thought www.christianbook.com has them too. The copyright page says 1879, but revised up to 1921. It is a very phonetically-oriented reader. There are words written phonetically above each lesson in which they are introduced. In the lower grades, the lessons are very short (maybe 1 page) and there are little exercises within the lessons (like one lesson will have a letter written in cursive, one lesson will have "slate exercises" at the end) - just depends on which reader you have. It is cheaper to buy the Primer-6th grade set altogether. I think I bought mine on Rainbow Resource's website. These things are great. It took my kids a while to get used to the writing, though....it's more descriptive than they're used to. Good luck!
