Tired of Classical Composers.....

Recommended Posts

looking for a curriculum with American composers such as:

Stephan Foster

John Philip Sousa

Irving Berlin

George Gershwin

Leonard Bernstein

Charles Ives

Cole Porter

Henry Mancini

Frank Zappa

Scott Joplin

Johnny Mercer

Harry Warren

Aaron Copland

Rogers & Hammerstein

Does such a curriculum exist or do I need to make up my own?

Thanks.

I'd recommend looking at Classics for Kids. They have a LOT of info on their website, including American composers. For example, selecting George Gershwin off your list, they have a brief biography and music clips. It isn't a LOT, but it makes a great jumping off point. You could always choose composers from their list, read their intro, and get library books and cds to supplement, which is what we do.

And they have a timeline of composers that is pretty handy.
