Fun science recommendation...

I stumbled on a book series at the library that is really fun, especially for kids who are fascinated by programs like Survivorman. The series is by Peter Riley and is called "Survivor Science: In the (blank)" with the blank filled in by Desert, Forest, Polar Regions, etc. Each book discusses the particular habitat and the challenges of living there, then provides experiments to explore how you might survive. For example, the Desert version had experiments that demonstrated the cooling effect of wearing a long robe in blazing sun and how you can get water from dry ground.

Here's a link to the Desert version: http://www.amazon.com/Survivors-Science-Desert/dp/1410902242/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1272635877&sr=1-4).

The books are pricey - $30+ - but worth looking for at your library.
