What unit curricula do you like the best?

We're not officially HSing until at least August, maybe September, but I thought it might be fun to do some unit studies with my kids over the summer. My 7 yo has expressed an interest in learning about volcanoes, so I thought we'd start there and then maybe let 5 yo DD pick the next one.

I've never used it, but I've heard a lot of people talk about Amanda Bennett unit studies. What it sounds to me like you might enjoy is lapbooks. You can do a google search to get some ideas...here's a couple to get you started:

They have a volcano unit study for K-2nd graders, I believe.

Thanks! Okay, I've seen a few things about lapbooks, but it just does not compute for some reason. . . what exactly are they?

Check out the links I gave you. They'll explain it way better than I can.

 

Basically, you make these little mini-books in different shapes, etc and put them together by attaching them to file folders. That description sounds pretty boring, but if you check out the links you'll see they can be quite fun, hands on, and something kids can really get creative with while learning lots.

 

I'm considering trying a couple myself. There's a lot of great info on the links i gave you - samples of completed lapbooks as well, so you can get a better idea of what they are.
