I think they get more out of those books when they are a bit older. I would emphasize that the books on TWTM list, make sure you get the unabridged versions. Swiss Family Robinson and Little Women (among others) are much tougher when you read the original versions. I added some sci-fi to the list such as Ender's Game and Ursula LeGuin.
