GESTEP
Does anyone have an opinion on this book and/or the activity guide? I cannot find samples of the text. We are looking for a story format that is interesting for an 8 and 9 yo who are not much into history. Stories hold their attention better and they retain more, but not the boring dry ones. We were using the Eggleston books and loved the first one (Stories of Great Americans) but the second one (A First Book of American History) was boring to all of us-myself included. Hopefully that gives you an idea of our tastes. Thanks:001_smile: http://www.hewitthomeschooling.com/book/bsingle.asp?i=2307
Karen in CO
My dd loved the book. Rainbow used to have samples online. We didn't use the activity guide, but more than a year after she read it, I am still surprised by how much she retained. It is a collection of American history hero tales framed inside the story of a sweet family that loves history. There was some religious content, but it didn't detract from the story and was mostly contained in the questions at the end of the chapter. I'd say it is on the same reading level as most early chapter books. I was impressed at the people and topics covered. I recommend it as often as I can.
