Does anyone here own a pet reptile?

Recommended Posts

My dd has absolutely loved reptiles of all sorts since she was itty bitty. She is turning 10 this month, and we think she's now mature and responsible enough to take care of a reptile pet (with supervision of course). We've done some research, and we're leaning towards a bearded dragon. So, we're going to buy her the terrarium and such for her birthday next week.

Can anyone point me to some good websites, or offer any advice regarding the terrarium? We don't want to go as cheap as possible, because we want something attractive that will be healthy for the lizard and not too hard for dd to handle. But of course we also don't have unlimited money to spend. Any brands or models that you could recommend?

Also, just more generally, any websites or books you would recommend for beginning herp enthusiasts?

TIA!

Alright it has been a long time since I owned a beardie (I love lizards so much) but I got his aquarium (I believe it was actually called a terrarium) at the pet store...It was like a 55gallon and I think I spent $100 on it...As for links, well, it's been awhile but I'll post a few that I noticed when I googled that I remember seeing before when I had my beardies...

Do you have a really good local pet store? We have the obvious Petco and Petsmarts, but the one we really love is a locally owned one that is like a visit to the zoo. They are reptile specialists and have so many WILD and wonderful frogs, lizards, turtles, snakes, spiders, scorpions, rats and guinea pigs. We got our piggie from them and visit often because it's a neat place, but also the employees are total small animal/reptile nerds. We have learned so much from them. We want to get our son either a turtle or a beardie in a year or so and will not hesitate to use them.

Go local!:D

(sorry, that doesn't answer your question really)

It does, actually! We do have one locally owned pet store that specializes in aquatics, amphibians, and reptiles. I definitely plan to check them out. I suspected they would be a lot more knowledgeable than the employees at Petsmart/Petco (while meaning no offense to the latter, but they have to be more generalized).

We just bought a hamster through our local place for our dd11. When our dd12 was younger, we got her a hamster through a national chain. The two experiences have been like night and day. The national chain handed us the animal and a care sheet (an ultimately unhelpful care sheet) and sent us on our way. The local place puts together small animal kits, so we went home with a fully assembled habitat with our hamster, they took the time to have dd11 hold different animals until she found one whose personality seemed compatible with hers, and they gave her tons of helpful tips and told her to call them anytime she had a question. They even walked us to the car to show her the safest way to transport her new pet home and wish her happiness with her new pet.

I can't praise our local pet store enough. I would encourage you to see if your local shop can help you put together a kit for your bearded dragon that meets both the animal's needs and your child's abilities.
